Permissive tax exemptions amended
Council amended permissive tax exemptions for the Royal Canadian Legion to exclude the lounge and added a new exemption for the new Cariboo Community Church at 35 Oliver Street for land and improvements.
Mayor Walt Cobb removed himself from the discussion for a perceived conflict of interest as he is a member of the legion and Coun. Sue Zacharias removed herself as well because she is a member of the church.
Fire protection bylaw amended
Council approved the City of Williams Lake Fire and Protection Amendment Bylaw. With the amendment, the fire department will officially train for and provide full fire service operation levels.
The bylaw also means that all mobile vendors must have commercial cooking equipment installed that meets the requirements of the Standard for Ventilation and Fire Protection of Commercial Cooking Operations where applicable.
Remembrance Day
Poppies will go on sale in Williams Lake beginning Oct. 28 and culminate on Nov. 11, with Remembrance Day ceremonies at the Gibraltar Room.
Council approved the ceremonies as well as the parade route and a commitment that staff will place barricades as requested.
The legion flag will also be displayed the week of Nov. 4 to 11 on the city’s flag pole.
CMHA requests letter of support
Council agreed to provide a letter of support for the Canadian Mental Health Association Cariboo Chilcotin’s Community Gaming Grant application. The monies, if received, would be used for the CMHA’s multicultural program, outreach, advocacy and support program.
Hamel property to be removed from biking trail
At an in-camera meeting held Oct. 4, 2016, council received a report from the director of development services about the bike trails on Fox Mountain that fall within Joe Hamel’s property.
Mayor Walt Cobb said there’d been a request the city consider purchasing the property, but that was not approved.
Instead, council will ask the Ministry of Forest, Lands and Natural Resource Operations and the biking associations to install new signage on Fox Mountain trails and remove all routes on the Hamel property from trail maps, including digital apps.
