Council drops heart

In a gesture of good will, city council has agreed to give up Salmon Arm’s heart to Sorrento.

In a gesture of good will, city council has agreed to give up Salmon Arm’s heart to Sorrento.

At council’s Monday meeting it was agreed the City of Salmon Arm would stop using “Heart of the Shuswap” as its slogan. This was in response to a request from the Sorrento & Area Community Association’s president Barry Stokes who, at an earlier council meeting, provided historical evidence that “Heart of the Shuswap” has been Sorrento’s slogan since as early as 1980.

The slogan will have to be removed from the city’s website, as well as a road sign, the cost of which is “negligible,” according to city administrator Carl Bannister.

Mayor Nancy Cooper said in the meantime the sign would be replaced with one that just says welcome. She said council may look at a contest so the public could be involved in determining a new slogan for Salmon Arm, but council hasn’t made any decisions yet.

The “Heart of the Shuswap” moniker continues to be used by the Sorrento Community Association and Sorrento businesses.
