Burns Lake residents will not only choose a new mayor in the village’s upcoming by-election, but also a new councillor.
Chris Beach announced his resignation as Burns Lake councillor on Oct. 5 in order to run for mayor.
“It’s been an honour to serve on council and I’ve gained a lot of knowledge about the municipality and the role of mayor,” said Beach. “Former Mayor [Luke] Strimbold was an excellent mentor and I am excited to work with our community on maintaining and strengthening the local economy, expanding partnerships with our local First Nations, and replacing our infrastructure in a fiscally responsible manner.”
Beach was the only councillor to announce his candidacy before the Oct. 5 deadline. If any other councillors choose to resign at this point, this would result in a second by-election.
The total cost of a by-election is approximately $5000.
According to Sheryl Worthing, Chief Administrative Officer for the Village of Burns Lake and the by-election’s Chief Election Officer, council can still function with one less councillor since three elected officials is quorum.
Former Burns Lake Mayor Luke Strimbold announced his resignation on Sept. 15, 2016 with approximately two years left on his term. Councillor John Illes was appointed as acting mayor until the new mayor is chosen.
Burns Lake residents interested in running for the mayor or councillor position can apply between Oct. 25, 2016 at 9 a.m. and Nov. 4 at 4 p.m. General voting will take place on Dec. 10, 2016 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the village office and advance polls will take place on Nov. 30.
