Every year, around 36 people are killed in the Lower Mainland in impaired-related crashes. In Langley alone, on average, four people are killed in drunk driving related crashes each year.
On June 29, the provincial government, police and ICBC launched this summer’s impaired driving CounterAttack campaign.
Throughout the summer, police across the province will be checking for impaired drivers at CounterAttack roadchecks.
On June 15, B.C.’s tough administrative penalties for drinking and driving returned to the roadside, after a successful court challenge. There is a more rigorous roadside and appeal process. The penalties remain unchanged.
Drivers can request a second breath test on a second screening device.
Between September 2010 and November 2011, police in B.C. issued 27,802 immediate roadside prohibitions to impaired drivers.
