Courtenay toy library seeking new members, volunteers

Whether it is an opportunity for parents to socialize or a way to try and reuse toys, the Comox Valley Toy Library provides its members with new toys every week at St. George's United Church.

Whether it is an opportunity for parents to socialize or a way to try and reuse toys, the Comox Valley Toy Library provides its members with new toys every week at St. George’s United Church.

The library is now searching for new members to join the organization and is hosting its annual general meeting Wesdnesday, April 11, at the church, from 7 to 8 p.m.

“It’s sort of like a night out; there’s a lot of new moms in the Comox Valley and it’s a good way to try to meet people – there’s so many people who are in the same position,” explained Kelly Allen, volunteer co-ordinator.

The evening, set for the fellowship hall upstairs at the church in Courtenay, offers free childcare for attendees and a free chocolate buffet.

In addition to the AGM, Allen said the goal is to seek board members and fill some positions with the library. The organization is specifically seeking to find an individual with fundraising skills along with someone with experience in marketing/promotion.

From games to trucks, puzzles and blocks, the library offers a variety of items suitable for younger children, and toys for older children as well. The idea is after purchasing a membership, members can ‘check-out’ toys for their children to play with, and then exchange for new ones.

“We’re always looking for volunteers when the library is open,” noted Allen, who added the library is open Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m., along with the first Saturday of every month from 10 to 11 a.m.

Volunteers put away toys, check them in and out in the system, help pick up extra toys or assist in carrying them to cars.

St. George’s United Church is located at 505 6th Street in Courtenay.
