COVID-19: Parksville council moves to Zoom, talks property tax and grants

Money for cancelled events now expected to be returned to the city

Parksville city council went virtual this week and discussed cancelled events and grant money that has already been given to organizers.

The April 6 meeting, held on Zoom, also discussed the idea of deferring property taxes. Council decided to move that conversation to the next meeting, on April 20, once they hear more from the province.

Coun. Adam Fras brought forward an amendment that would dictate events that received money from the city that don’t go forward are required to return it. It was unanimously passed.

He mentioned the Foster Park Easter Egg Hunt, which was cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns.

“We have had someone in the past return it when their event didn’t take place,” said Amanda Weeks, manager of administrative services and corporate officer for the town.

A few grants-in-aid were recently awarded, for a total of $1,925 being split between four organizations. Kidsfest, set to take place in August, was one of the recipients. As of now, it’s set to go on.
