CVRD Honourable Mention for ISC energy savings
The Cowichan Valley Regional District has received an Honourable Mention from the BC Community Energy Association for its “outstanding work” to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions at the Island Savings Centre.
In 2015, the ISC reduced natural gas consumption by 50 per cent and electricity consumption by 20 per cent compared to 2012 energy consumption.
This equals more than $140,000 in annual energy cost savings and a reduction of 250 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.
“These results validate the cost effectiveness of energy upgrades to the CVRD’s aging facilities. It also demonstrates the CVRD’s commitment to carbon neutral operations and sustainable service delivery,” said Sharon Jackson, chairwoman of the ISC Commission.
CVRD gives OK for $25,000 to host hockey championship
The Cowichan Valley Regional District has approved a $25,000 Grant-in-Aid from its budget for 2017 to help host the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships in May.
The Cowichan Valley was selected earlier this month by the Aboriginal Sport Circle and the Aboriginal Sport, Recreation and Physical Activity Partners Council to host the championships.
The NAHC is held annually for elite midget-age male and female aboriginal hockey players from across Canada, providing an opportunity for competition as well as encouraging cultural unity and pride.
The hockey games will be played at the Island Savings Centre and Cowichan Lake Sports Arena on May 1-6.
