The Cowichan Lake weir has resumed operations, albeit a bit later than usual due to wet spring conditions.

The resumption of weir operations took place Monday, May 2.

The weir operation will begin to gradually reduce water flow from Cowichan Lake into the Cowichan River to the target flow set by the Ministry of Environment, to a minimum of seven cubic meters per second.

This control of Cowichan Lake water ensures that stakeholders down river have access to water all year round. It also serves to dilute treated sewage, and ensure that fish are able to swim up and down the river.

The Cowichan Lake boat lock, which allows boats to travel between the lake and the river, has also resumed operations.

Catalyst Paper Crofton Division operates the weir under the direction of the Ministry of Environment, and in accordance with their established regulations and the terms of their licenses.

The weir and boat lock are now in operation 24 hours per day during the control season, which will continue  until the fall rainy season.
