North Cowichan’s South End firefighters were summoned to the Cowichan Sportsplex on Chesterfield Street shortly after 7:30 a.m. Wednesday after a report of a possible structure fire.

Upon arrival, deputy fire chief Brad Coleman was able to tell the rest of the crew to stand down.

That’s not to say there hadn’t been a fire, however.

“It was some papers,” Coleman explained while holding a fire extinguisher. “It looks like some track-walkers must have seen it.”

Coleman said the fire was too close to one of the storage shed buildings alongside the track. It was quickly put out.

It looked to have been intentionally set so police were called.

A maintenance worker said a homeless person had been sleeping nearby and was likely trying to keep warm.
