Gordon Smith, owner of Cowichan Woodwork, has begun a major expansion of his shop in Cobble Hill.

A major expansion has begun at Cowichan Woodwork Ltd., located on Thain Road in Cobble Hill.

Owner Gordon Smith said the expansion, which is expected to cost approximately $450,000, will see 4,400 extra square feet added to the business, bringing the total square footage to 11,400.

He said the construction project is expected to take the whole summer, but the shop, which specializes in cabinetry making and millwork, will remain open during its regular business hours.

“This is the just the latest renovation and addition I’ve done to the shop since I bought it in 2008,” Smith said.

“We do a lot of high-end cabinets and millwork and our products are distributed across North America, and we’ve been tripping over each other for some time, so we’re really looking forward to this addition. One big aspect of the project is that we’ll have a big and beautiful new showroom when it’s complete.”

Crowe & Appel carrying on tradition in Cowichan Bay with new business

David Krieger and his family knew a good business opportunity when they saw one.

When the owners of the popular Cowichan Bay Seafood restaurant decided to close up shop and focus their energies on their remaining restaurant in Victoria, Krieger jumped at the opportunity and opened Crowe & Appel Fine Foods at the location last month.

Kreiger’s daughter, Serafina Appel, is the manager of the new business, which includes a restaurant, deli and cafe.

She said the Crowe & Appel, located at 1751 Cowichan Bay Rd., will continue Cowichan Bay Seafood’s practice of supplying local seafoods and meats, and most other foods and ingredients are local as well.

“It was an easy switchover, and business has been great since we opened,” Appel said.

“It’s spot prawn season now and that’s bringing in lots of customers. We’ll continue to have seafood food available during harvesting seasons.”
