CP issues statement regarding Kicking Horse Lower Canyon access

CP has issued a statement with regards to the Lower Canyon issue, which continues to be a thorn in the side of Golden rafters.

With negotiations between the Province and Canadian Pacific appearing to hit a stalemate, CP has issued the following statement regarding access to the Lower Canyon of the Kicking Horse River:

“CP is disappointed that the solutions proposed to enable crossing at Mile 30 of the Mountain Subdivision, will not be met by the Government of British Columbia. CP has been involved in good-faith discussions but the Government of B.C. has stated that it is unwilling to assume liability, acknowledging with CP how complex and risky the situation is. Without full indemnification, CP cannot support rafters accessing the Kicking Horse River at this location as it poses a significant risk to their own safety as well as the safety of CP crews and the freight they are transporting. CP’s position has not changed since the April 22 meeting, when an agreement-in-principle was reached with stakeholders in Golden.”

The Lower Canyon of the Kicking Horse River is known as the crown jewel of Golden’s rafting industry. Currently, rafting is only permitted on the Upper and Middle portions of the river due to the access issue with CP.
