A 64-year-old motorcyclist from Errington is in stable condition at a Victoria hospital after a dramatic crash near Nanoose Bay that closed the northbound lanes of the Island Highway for two hours on Friday afternoon.

RCMP say the man had to be airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital with numerous injuries.

“Our last update is he is going to recover, is out of the intensive care unit and in stable condition,” Oceanside RCMP Cpl. Jeese Foreman said Monday morning.

Police say the man lost control of his motorcycle in what’s known as the Nanoose Flats area and impacted the concrete barrier. Police say speed and/or alcohol are not considered factors in the crash.

The wait for the helicopter, and the police investigation of the roadway, closed the highway for about two hours, affecting numerous events and delaying plans for many people heading to Parksville Qualicum Beach and points north.
