Kelowna has the dubious distinction of taking nine of the ten top spots in an ICBC list of the Southern Interior’s most accident plagued intersections.
The most dangerous, according to ICBC’s data, is where Harvey Avenue meets Spall Road. That treacherous spot has a yearly tally of 95 crashes.
Const. Kris Clark of the Kelowna RCMP said that it’s a busy intersection, so it only makes sense that a high volume of crashes have been reported.
Without going into specifics, Const. Clark added that most accidents can be attributed to errant driver behaviour.
“Aggressive driving behaviours tend to be the worst,” he said, adding that when people try and beat the yellow or follow the car in front of them too closely, things are bound to go wrong.
Drivers who use their mobile phones while they’re supposed to be paying attention to the roads are also creating a needless spike in the number of accidents across the region.
•Slightly fewer smash ups are had at the No. 2 location of Dilworth Drive and Harvey Avenue, where there were 81 accidents.
•The third is Benvoulin Road and Dilworth Drive, where 67 crashes occurred.
•Cooper Road and Harvey Avenue logged 62.
•Banks Road and Highway 97 North, in the tuning lane, was the site of 61 accidents.
•Where Gordon Drive meets Harvey Avenue there were 53 crashes.
•At Clement Avenue and Clifton Road there were 46 accidents.
•Where Enterprise Way, Highway 97 North and Leathead Road meet, there were 46 smash ups.
•Highway 33 West and Highway 97 North was the location of 45 impacts.
•Highway 97 North and Old Vernon Road and Sexsmith Road meet, causing 44 accidents last year.
Kamloops lone mention was where 8th street meets Fortune Drive and Tranquille Road.
