Crews battle early morning fire on Surrey/Langley border

The Surrey Fire Department was backed up by Langley Township crews for a Saturday morning fire at 195th Street and 32nd Avenue.

Thick smoke could be seen in the area, coming from a property that fronts 196th Street, the border between the two municipalities.

Surrey initially dispatched water trucks but called them off when Langley was able to hook it into the Township fire hydrants nearby.

"It’s a single storey rancher with some out buildings," explained Surrey assistant chief Brian Woznikoski.

A natural gas leak kept crews at bay waiting for the gas company to shut off the supply.

There were no injuries. The home appeared occupied but there was no one present at the time of the fire, he said.

"There’s extensive damage to both the home" and an outbuilding, he added.

The RCMP were also dispatched to the scene because the fire is considered suspicious.
