Firefighters haven’t got the upper hand on a wildfire in the Sugar Lake area yet.
As of Monday morning, the Mt. Nelson fire is about 107 hectares in size.
“The fire is not contained at this time and we could see an increase in fire behaviour with warm temperatures,” said Kayla Pepper, a fire information officer with the Kamloops Fire Centre.
The initial report of the wildfire came in Saturday just before 1 p.m.
It’s believed the cause may be a hold-over lightning strike from a couple of weeks ago.
There are no structures in the area but crews are trying to protect valuable timber stands.
“We want to minimize the size of the fire and keep it from spreading,” said Pepper.
Currently, the fire is spreading into the higher elevations.
“There is still some snow in that area which creates a natural break for us,” said Pepper.
