Crime map on city’s website

Merging of crime data with municipal mapping system allows visual portrayal

Maple Ridge residents will be better able to track crime online in Maple Ridge, thanks to the RCMP’s crime prevention team and the city’s mapping geographic information specialist.

A new online crime map takes data from police files and merges it with a digital map of the city to allow people to look at incidents of crime by category, date or even specific file number.

According to the city, police use their ‘on the street’ information and combine that with digital intelligence, which allows them to identify hot spots of criminal activity and target their enforcement work on a day-to-day basis.

The hope is that people, in turn, will report criminal activity. To be on the safe side, only blocks numbers are identified in the crime locations, not the house numbers.

The City of Nanaimo helped Maple Ridge adapt the system for its purposes. The link for the Maple Ridge crime map: https://www.mapleridge.ca/1027/Crime-Map.
