TERRACE’s crime rate severity index places the city in the top 30 cities with more than 10,000 population in the country, but the ranking is a drop of 16 places in the last two years.
That’s according to Statistics Canada’s Crime Severity Index results for 238 police services in communities with more than 10,000 residents in 2010.
Terrace is in 29th place, down from its 13th place showing two years ago.
It also means the city has a crime severity index one-and-a-half times higher than the national average, also down from being double the national average in 2008.
The violent crime severity index shows that Terrace is even better, ranked at 34.
Williams Lake, which was the top-rated place in 2008, has slid down to fifth place but is still the top city listed in the province.
Also making the top 10 are Prince Rupert at number 8 and Fort St. John at number 10.
Prince George came in at 11th place.
The lowest ranked B.C. city is Comox at 228th place, with a crime rate index nearly two-and-a-half times lower than the national average.
Stats Can started keeping track of the Crime Severity Index in 2009, saying it addressed the amount of crime but also its severity
It also shows whether crime is more or less serious than in previous years and whether reported crime is more or less serious than in other places, says the Stats Can website.
The five lowest ranked places with the lowest crime severity index, and safest locations to live, are all in Ontario: South Frontenac, Tecumseh, Lasalle, Meaford and Amherstburg.
