For almost a decade Mountview Elementary School crossing guard Lorraine Williams has been putting smiles on the faces of students, staff, parents and commuters with her costumes and friendly manner.
“I dress for whatever is happening,” the 61 year old said Tuesday morning as she manned the crosswalk by the school, wearing a BC Lions hat, T-shirt, socks and orange earrings.
“Football season starts soon and I’m tired of hockey.”
Being a crossing guard gets her out of bed in the morning, Williams added.
As one of the parents walked her seven-year-old daughter to the crosswalk on the other side of the Dog Creek Road, Williams called out and asked the mother how her daughter was feeling.
“A lot better,” the mom replied.
Several motorists driving by honked and Williams waved back with a big smile.
Principal Rick Miller said Williams has been an icon at the school and is a great person.
Crossing guards and bus drivers do not receive enough credit, Miller added.
“They greet the children first thing in the morning. It makes the day easier for the staff to have the students’ day start off that way.”
