A 54-year-old tradition in Vernon is in jeopardy.

The Queen Silver Star Excellence Program could be cancelled if additional interest isn’t gained.

“At this time we do not have enough candidates to run the program for another year and are extending the package deadline one more time,” said Kelsey von Holst, Queen Silver Star committee member and former royalty.

The deadline for candidate packages was June 4, but is now being extended to Thursday, June 12.

“We really don’t want to see a program that has been in our community for 54 years end now.”

Von Holst retired her Queen Silver Star XLIX crown in 2010 and having experienced the program she can’t say enough about it.

“I know how much I loved the program and grew from it and want that for other young girls.”

During its 54-years, the program has helped an immeasurable number of young girls grow into young women.

And it is not the beauty pageant it once was.

“Through the program you learn from a variety of different classes, experience many new opportunities and gain everlasting friendships,” said von Holst, who has put the skills she learned to use specifically this year.

But without more candidates coming forward, the committee is concerned those opportunities will be lost for local youth.

Candidate applications are available at the Vernon Winter Carnival Office and in the schools. Completed packages can be dropped off at the Winter Carnival Office, either in the office or mail box (due to the situation, reference letters can be sent in later).
