The Columbia Shuswap Regional District is hosting a meeting on April 18 at 7 p.m. at the Golden Arena lounge to discuss farming licences.
Karen Persson, from G & K Persson Farms in Golden, will do a presentation at the meeting in hopes of gaining some more support for her application of a Class E licence, which would allow her farm to slaughter one to 10 animal units at their location. The animals slaughtered on their farm would only be sellable from their location.
Persson wants to apply for this licence so she won’t have to transport her livestock an hour and a half to the abattoir in Invermere. However, she would still require the use of a cut and wrap facility to package the meat.
“I will do a presentation again to whoever comes, and fill them in on what’s happening with the licencing issue, and what we’re doing,” she explained. “I’d like to have it pretty informal after that and kind of mingle and talk about it. Garry and I will both be there, so I’d like to have an informal round table.”
The farmers are sending a letter to the Ministry of Agriculture in hopes of obtaining the Class E licence, and they are gathering more letters from different associations around Golden in support of their goal.
Anyone who wants to learn more about what they are doing, or show their support can attend the meeting where Persson will be gathering more signatures to support their application.
“We have a bunch of support letters happening. After this meeting, I’m hoping to have a whole package to send to the minister,” she said.
