There were lots of islanders keeping a close eye on the NDP leadership convention Saturday (March 24), as local MP Nathan Cullen surged ahead of several other candidates and stayed on the ballot until the final round of voting. Quebec MP Thomas Mulcair was the winner. Elizabeth Inkster voted throughout the day Saturday from Tlell. The online voting process was sometimes slow, she said, but it was great to see Mr. Cullen do so well. “I didn’t honestly think he had a chance on it but I think it has raised his profile enormously across the country,” she said. “Nathan is so young still and he’s so dedicated. There’ll always be another chance.” In Sandspit, Evan Putterill voted in advance, then watched the race unfold over the internet. “We were all cheering for him here,” he said. “It was good to see him do so well.”
