Cumberland approves location change for cannabis permit

Site next door to the one planned seen as more financially feasible

Cumberland council has approved a permit change for a cannabis operation that wants to open its doors next door to where it had planned.

Beaufort Botanicals received a temporary use permit (TUP) for the property at 2703 Dunsmuir Ave. in the spring of 2019.

A staff report says in the interim, the applicant has faced some financial challenges with the location but that the site next door would be more feasible. The request is to amend the permit for the location to be at 2701 Dunsmuir Ave.

“The space came free, and it’s a bit more suitable for them,” senior planner Karin Albert told council at a meeting in early November. “It’s really just moving the TUP from one side of the building to the other.”

The new address has the same building envelope and legal description as the original address. The applicant provided the village with a revised floor plan, site and landscape plan and a rendering for sign and window covering.

In response to a question from council, Albert said the amendment would not restart the time frame for the temporary use permit. A year into the permit, the business has a couple of years left before having to apply for a renewal of the TUP or to rezone the site.

Members approved a motion to change the permit to the new location.

“I’m happy to see this moving forward. Let’s fill that space,” said Coun. Vickey Brown.

Beaufort Botanicals is one of two cannabis-related businesses approved by the village. The other, Trugreen Solutions, is now operating at a location on Third Street. Private cannabis businesses not only need local government approval but have to receive approvals or permits from senior levels of government.
