Cumberland neighbours concerned about traffic

Residents in an area of Coal Valley Estates in Cumberland have formed an organization in an effort to reduce traffic volume and speeders on Kendal Avenue, where parked vehicles create congestion and reduce pedestrian visibility.

ATVs are also an issue.

Jodi Sperber, a member of the Kendal Avenue Neighbourhood Association, feels it is a matter of time before someone is hurt.

Fellow KANA member Nic Pisterzi, acknowledging the installation of a 30 km/h sign on the street, would like to see speed bumps and stop signs strategically placed throughout the neighbourhood.

“We are deeply concerned,” Pisterzi said at Monday’s council meeting. “Many of us want change — and soon.”

The group hopes Kendal can be changed from a feeder road to a local traffic road. To decrease volume, a long-term goal is to close off Egremont past Rydel, where the road used to end.

Pisterzi invited council to attend a KANA meeting, and asked how long it would take to address the group’s concerns.

Village CAO Sundance Topham, who commended the group for being proactive, noted Children Playing signs that have been posted in the area, in addition to the 30 km/h sign.
