Cummins, B.C. Conservatives hire two new campaign pros

Former Newfoundland premier Brian Peckford and Fraser Valley MP Randy White join the B.C. Conservatives for their election 2013 campaign.

B.C. Conservative leader John Cummins has added some luster to his roster, hiring ex-Newfoundland premier Brian Peckford and former Fraser Valley MP Randy White for his May, 2013 election campaign.

According to the Globe and Mail, the new hires will work as the issues-management committee, interacting with other sources in the provincial Conservative party. Cummins cited their work in their own campaigns and their history with the Tories as the main reasons for their hiring.

“They have been through the wars and through fires of campaigns,” Cummins said. “They’re (going to be) the first responders, you might say… When we have to respond to an issue and do it quickly, you need to be able to reference some people and sound out the position you may be taking. It’s important for us to get it right the first time.”

The B.C. Conservatives currently have one seat in the Legislature, which they got when ex-Liberal John van Dongen switched parties.

In a poll by Forum Research Inc. last week, the Toronto-based group said that the NDP are on pace for 79 of the 85 seats, while the Liberals are on track for four. The remaining two, they said, would be held by independents.
