Curbside composting a year away for all Oak Bay

By next year, no one in Oak Bay will have an excuse for throwing kitchen scraps in the garbage

By next year, no one in Oak Bay will have an excuse for throwing kitchen scraps in the garbage.

Oak Bay was the first municipality in the Capital Regional District to launch a curb side kitchen scraps program in 2006 and this week, Victoria went forward with their organics pick-up service.

At the beginning of Oak Bay’s program, kitchen scraps recycling was offered to four Oak Bay garbage routes. About half of the residents on those routes, 2,000 households, signed up for the pilot project and have been using the service since. Soon all residents will be mandated to participate said Phil Barnett, superintendent of public works.

While residents won’t experience any changes at the moment – even for those interested in opting in early; there aren’t enough organics bins available to service the municipality – public works is planning to launch the full program in January, 2014.

If you’re uncertain if your home is located within the four currently serviced routes, or for more information, call 250-598-4501.
