Harrison man Sonny Damato has announced he is no longer running for Village mayor due to medical reasons.

In July, Damato announced his intention to run in the fall election on a campaign of assorted goals and promises for the community including, but not limited to: reforming council, rebutting ‘stupid bylaws’ and investigating the current water management program in the Village.

He posted Wednesday that after a recent surgery, an ‘intricate hitch’ is going to extend his healing period into elections season.

“This will not allow me to perform and do my duty at 100% capacity if elected,” he wrote. “So it is with great dejection and unwillingness that I have to announce my withdrawal from the candidacy for mayor of Harrison.”

“If I can’t give my 100 per cent, I won’t do it,” Damato told the Observer. “It is a pity because I was looking forward to it.”

Damato had used his Facebook page to frequently express his disdain for ‘corrupt politicians’ and his plans to do the job differently.

Even though he isn’t running Damato hopes the election will bring “a change for the better.”

“I think this little town is going to be over-developed very quickly. And it’s a pity,” he said. “That’s my number one concern.”

He ended his Facebook announcement Wednesday with a statement: “You will always be right if you ‘MAKE A POINT AND PROVE IT,'” he wrote.
