If you haven’t heard about the End of the World Masquerade Party that runs next week, you can be forgiven — posters for the event have been disappearing all over town.
Vern Gorham, the producer behind the Kootenays’ Best Singer contest series, is hosting the Dec. 21 party, which coincides with the supposed end of the Mayan calendar. But he’s been kept on his toes by replacing posters, some from inside stores, and replaced over a dozen on Wednesday.
“Most of those were places they were taken from,” he said.
The subject of the end of the world is touchy for some, but for Gorham — not to mention the dozens who have already purchased tickets —it was just an excuse to have a blast.
“I thought it would be fun to throw a really crazy party,” he said. “I respect other people’s beliefs. But I don’t believe the world is going to end that night. And if it does end, we’ll all be together.”
The 19-plus event runs from 8 p.m.-2 a.m. starting Dec. 21, and will have a cash bar, snacks and appetizers, as well as prizes for the best male and female costume.
And of course, great entertainment will be a highlight. In addition to dance music DJed by Gorham, Trena Speers, who won Kootenays’ Best Singer in June, will perform two sets of country music, and Creston’s Best Singer winner Matt Hansen and his band, Bred for Noise, will take to the stage at midnight.
“I love to showcase the talent I’ve found in the Kootenays,” Gorham said. “It’s a great opportunity to hear people who, in my mind, are as good as professionals, and celebrate them.”
Tickets for the party at the Creston and District Community Complex are $25 ($40 per couple), available at Black Bear Books and Kingfisher Used Books.
