Davidson Road Kindergarten students unveil insect hotels

Understanding connection between insects and plants, students move from squishers to savers with community-built insect hotels.

It’s open season for insect hotels at Davidson Road Elementary.

The four kindergarten classes at Davidson Road Elementary held an official opening for the insect hotels the 87 students designed and built this year with the help of parents, teachers and the community.

The structures are designed to attract bugs to pollinate plants in the area.

“The students have evolved from curious to creators, from bystanders to builders and from squishers to savers,” said principal Janet Slaney. “We’re so very proud of our students to take on this responsibility. This has strengthened the connection between the students and their natural environment.”

Students gathered around the four structures on Monday morning as parents and teachers gathered for the official grand opening of the Bug Oasis, the Snug Bug Hotel, the Rolly Polly Inn and the Hoppy Hotel.

Slaney thanked parents and grandparents who helped bring in supplies as well as Bowman Greenhouses in Lake Country for its support.
