A dead bear cub was found Monday, May 30, near the South Shore Road turnoff to the Cowichan Lake Education Centre.

The bear appeared to be partly skinned.

It’s unclear whether the bear was poached and then dumped, or hit by a vehicle and then moved and skinned.

It appeared to have been there for at least a day.

The site, located down a path, a few yards from South Shore Road, has become cluttered with garbage in recent days, with people dumping garbage right next to a fish bearing creek.

Local conservation officer Mark Kissinger was unavailable for comment.

To report incidents of poaching, the BC Conservation Office can be contacted at  250-746-1236. Alternatively, the Lake Cowichan RCMP can be contacted at 250-749-6668.

Tips can also be made anonymously through contacting Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
