Deadline looming for Vernon Christmas food hampers

Friday is the deadline to apply for Christmas food hampers through the Salvation Army.

There is still time for Vernon residents to ensure they have enough to eat at Christmas.

Friday is the deadline to apply for Christmas food hampers through the Salvation Army.

“We’re about 100 interviews behind where we were last year at this time,” said David MacBain, community ministries director.

About 311 applications had been filled out as of Wednesday compared to 408 in 2013.

MacBain doubts the need for assistance has disappeared in the community.

“I believe people just haven’t taken the time to come in (and apply),” he said.

It’s still anticipated that the Salvation Army will hand out more than 700 Christmas food hampers this year.

“It’s going to be busy,” said MacBain of people who leave applications until the last minute.

“Please come in if you are in need. We want to make sure no one is missed.”

Application forms are available at the Salvation Army’s two thrift stores and the food bank.
