The death of a Metchosin woman while in the care of a West Shore RCMP officer is now under investigation by B.C.’s Independent Investigations Office.

According to the IIO, on Aug. 8 the West Shore RCMP responded to a complaint involving the female. As a result of the complaint, an officer decided to transport the woman back to her home in Metchosin.

At the home, while still under the care of the officer, the woman fell and sustained serious injuries. The woman was hospitalized and died in hospital on Aug. 26.

There are no further details being released while the matter is under investigation.

The IIO has taken jurisdiction over the case and is investigating. The agency investigates all cases of death and serious injury involving police officers in the province.

West Shore RCMP spokesperson Corp. Kathy Rochlitz said the detachment can’t comment on the investigation or the incident while it’s under the jurisdiction of the IIO. West Shore RCMP did confirm the officer is still in active duty and the investigation is focused on one particular officer.
