An Abbotsford resident has been identified as the man who died following a traffic stop Dec. 21 in South Surrey.
Officials with the B.C. Coroners Service announced Thursday that 42-year-old Prashant Jasuja was “found in medical distress” behind the wheel of a van just before 1 a.m., during a Surrey RCMP traffic stop near 24 Avenue and King George Boulevard.
Transported to Royal Columbian Hospital, he was pronounced dead later that afternoon.
The coroners service is continuing to investigate the circumstances of Jasuja’s death.
The incident is also the subject of an investigation by the Independent Investigations Office.
It occurred less than an hour after a shooting in Newton, in which a 35-year-old woman was wounded in the hand and shoulder.
IIO officials confirmed later that morning that the same man was at the centre of both incidents. In the South Surrey case, the subject was said to have suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
