Cause of the fire is unknown at this time

Emergency crews responded to a house fire Monday evening in the community of Deep Creek about 21 kilometres north of Williams Lake.

A band member from the community told the Tribune a woman was alone at home, which was located on Mountain House Road, when the fire started. She tried to fight it herself, then with help from two other community members, before fire crews arrived, but that the home burned quickly.

The Wildwood Volunteer Fire Dept. attended and the Williams Lake Fire Dept. sent a crew to assist.

Brad Elliott, Deputy Fire Chief with the Wildwood Fire Dept., said that 12 members attended with the department’s main engine and two pumper trucks to fight the structure fire blaze.

“It was realized very early we would need mutual aid and the Williams Lake Fire Dept. assisted right away,” Elliott said, noting the structure fire was a “total loss.”

Rob Warnock, Deputy Chief of the Williams Lake Fire Dept., said they attended with a pumper truck and eight firefighters.

“We were there for about two and a half hours,” Warnock said.

Emergency Health Services B.C. and the RCMP were also on scene.

Williams Lake RCMP Insp. Jeff Pelley said all individuals were accounted for and there were no injuries, but one person was examined as a precaution.

“The matter is actively under investigation with the cause yet to be determined,” Pelley said.

This story was updated Tuesday morning with comments from Wildwood Volunteer Fire Dept.’s deputy chief.
