New owners of a historical building in Armstrong have been given 30 days to demolish it.
City of Armstrong staff deemed the old brick building at 3255 Okanagan Street as “dilapidated, offensive, as well as a potential safety hazard to the community” in a memo to council.
The new owners, a couple from Edmonton, had requested an extension to July of 2012 to demolish the building.
“We consider this request to be too long taking into consideration the condition of the building and the potential safety hazard to the general public,” wrote Dave Gardner, the city’s senior building inspector, in his memo to council.
Previous owners had all of the broken windows and the crawl space into the building boarded up, and all of the rubbish was taken out of the facility.
The new owners had an engineering firm from Vernon check out the structural integrity of the building, and their assessment was that extensive work was needed to bring the building up to acceptable structural standards.
The owners then requested the extension to July.
Council voted unanimously on a staff recommendation to recommend the owner demolish the building within 30 days.
Coun. John Trainor was absent from the meeting.
