Developers could tackle new gym

Regional District of North Okanagan board agreed to investigate the feasibility of an indoor facility for gymnastics and other activities

A proposed multi-use sports facility in Greater Vernon may not necessarily be public.

On Wednesday, the Regional District of North Okanagan board agreed to investigate the feasibility of an indoor facility for gymnastics and other activities.

But staff have also now been instructed to consider project delivery.

“The options could be P3 (public/private partnership) or a private developer,” said director Brian Quiring.

The North Valley Gymnastics Society wants the Greater Vernon Advisory Committee to identify a site where an 8,000-square-foot building could be developed.

Chairperson looks to the communities

The Regional District of North Okanagan’s new chairperson wants to create awareness.

At his first meeting at the helm, Bob Fleming told his colleagues that beyond reports from various committees, he wants directors to report on activities in their communities.

“I want to find out what people are doing,” he said.

In his attempt to create awareness, Fleming provided a written report to directors about a variety of issues in the regional district.

Blue Dot encouraged

The Regional District of North Okanagan is being urged to make the environment a priority.

Members of the Sustainable Environment Network Society have asked RDNO to join the Blue Dot movement.

“It’s time to put out health and wellbeing above all else,” said Kelli Westgate, with SENS.

Among the possible actions are promoting green roofs, bicycle infrastructure, food composting and a cosmetic pesticide ban.

No decision has been made by RDNO yet, but board members appear receptive to SENS.

“There are no boundaries when it comes to these issues — clean air and water,” said director Juliette Cunningham.
