There’s nothing like a cup of hot coffee for the road, but police are urging drivers to consider having that java either before or after they complete their travel.
The warning came in light of a two-vehicle crash on Highway 4 near the Piers Trailer Park in Coombs Friday.
Oceanside RCMP Corporal Richard van de Pol said the crash occurred when a 26-year-old man from Parksville reached for his cup of coffee.
“When he looked up, the vehicle in front had stopped,” van de Pol said. “He rear-ended a blue Chevy van, which was also travelling towards Coombs.”
An ambulance crew attended the crash and treated the van driver for minor injuries.
“The van was towed and sustained major damage,” van de Pol said. “A violation ticket was issued for driving too closely.”
He said the crash could have been easily avoided.
“This is just another example of a distracted driver,” he said. “We see it all the time, people putting on lipstick, drinking coffee and texting. When driving a vehicle, just drive it. If you want a coffee, stop for coffee.”
