A celebration for the 50th anniversary of incorporation for the District of 100 Mile House, which will be held this summer, was discussed at the Feb. 10 council meeting.
The District was incorporated on July 27, 1965.
As a longtime resident who was “here for the first one,” Councillor Bill Hadden said he would like to sit on the committee being struck to organize the celebration.
He suggested there should be at least two members from council with a couple of others invited to participate from the community.
Coun. Dave Mingo, who filled in as acting mayor at the meeting, also volunteered to sit on the committee, but noted he may be out of town on the tentative event dates (July 18-19).
That weekend was suggested by staff to coincide with the Hot July Nights Car & Bike Show, and Mingo explained if it is chosen, he could contribute to the advance planning.
Other community members could be invited from the South Cariboo Chamber of Commerce and some service clubs, he added.
Hadden noted past mayor, Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett also volunteered her time and assistance.
Coun. Ralph Fossum said he’s like to keep abreast of what is going on, but has other upcoming commitments keeping him busy.
“I know that [publisher] Chris Nickless from the Free Press would like to be on the committee, and I think that’s a wonderful idea … he has some other ideas to add substance to the overall event.”
The car show and bringing in some form of entertainment were among initial ideas, he added.
While councillors all agreed the committee should be small, Fossum said past mayors and councillors could be asked for some overall input.
Council then agreed to initiate the committee with Hadden and Mingo, who will seek and invite the other members, with District staff providing support and oversight of financial implications.
No decision on staff’s recommended budget allocation of $25,000 was made at the meeting.
