Coldstream is planting the seed for a greener community by giving away free trees.
The district will have free seedlings available for Coldstream residents Sunday between 10 a.m. and noon at the municipal office.
Thanks to a donation from Mike Carlson, former Kalamalka Forestry Centre research scientist, more than 1,000 seedlings will be available.
Douglas fir, pine, spruce and cedar varieties will be given out as a way of sprucing up the community.
“Pine trees use the least water, but cedar trees do surprisingly well once they get established,” said Mayor Jim Garlick, who annually organizes the seedling give-away.
Parks discussion forum disputed
The prospect of moving parks and recreation discussions behind closed doors isn’t going over well with some.
There is ongoing dispute over governance, control and contracts with the Greater Vernon parks and recreation service.
As a result, Coldstream director Doug Dirk, who represents the municipality at the Regional District of North Okanagan, had suggested that the meetings be moved in-camera.
But one of his colleagues has a differing opinion.
“I don’t actually feel the same way,” said Coldstream Coun. Gyula Kiss.
“The general discussion has to be open.”
Meanwhile, Mayor Jim Garlick defends the need for in-camera discussions due the potential impacts on staff.
Dirk says his colleague’s opinions have been noted, but a decision has not yet been made as to whether parks review meetings will move out of the public forum yet.
