Hundreds of people in the District of Kent received their first dose of the COVID-9 vaccine in early April clinics, according to reports to district council.

During the council meeting on Monday, April 12, Coun. Susan Spaeti and Mayor Sylvia Pranger reported success at two recent vaccination clinics in Agassiz. About 350 people were vaccinated at each clinic, both held at the Agricultural Hall on April 1 and 7. Shoppers Drug Mart and Remedy’s Rx Pharmacy in Agassiz are also providing vaccinations to the 55- to 65-year-old population.

“Agassiz is really stepping up to make sure this vaccination clinic is successful,” Pranger told council; she herself has received her first dose.

According to the most recent data from the B.C. Centre for Disease Control, there were an additional 14 cases of COVID-19 recorded in between March 28 and April 3. There is a public exposure event at Sasquatch Mountain Resort on April 4 and 5, and there have been no exposure events in the Fraser-Cascade school district since mid-January.

As of Friday, April 16, those aged 45 and older and people who are clinically extremely vulnerable may register for a vaccine online at www2.gov.bc.ca/getvaccinated or by calling 1-833-838-2323. Phone lines are open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Indigenous persons aged 18 and older may also register for their vaccine.

In other council business:

District council approved manual treatment for invasive plant species along district dikes. This treatment is part of a training program for StrongerBC invasive plant crews. If all goes as planned, a team of four will work for four months, training how to manage invasive species. Training locations will be on public land as invasive plant treatment sets its sights on problematic species such as tansy ragwort and blueweed.

Council welcomed PowerWood to Agassiz. Now set up on Tower Road, the formerly Surrey-based company processes raw cedar, creating building materials and other dry wood products.

B.C. Hydro awarded the district with $900 as part of its Tree Replacement Program. This funding would replace the trees felled or damaged in the windstorm earlier this year in Centennial Park. The district previously received funding under the same re-greening initiative to plan trees in Valley View Cemetery.

The next regular District of Kent council meeting is slated for April 26 at 7 p.m. Registration to attend the meeting via Microsoft Teams is available at kentbc.ca.
