Parents whose children will begin kindergarten in the fall are being encouraged to get their kids registered now.

The district has 510 children registered for kindergarten for the 2014/15 school year so far, but trustees would like to get a firm handle on enrolment numbers.

“We need to get preliminary numbers to the government now,” said district secretary-treasurer Lewis Hill at Wednesday’s district board meeting. “These aren’t the numbers that lock in our budget but where they expect to see our students with enrolment.”

District superintendent Joe Rogers said there are still a number of families who have not yet registered their children, but at this point, enrolment is higher than was initially predicted for the fall.

Cherryville elementary school projections for kindergarten were for eight students, but so far 13 have registered.

“In some situations we are behind, in some we are ahead so anything we can do to encourage parents of kindergarten students to get their children registered would be great,” said Rogers. “It would be fantastic if we knew before September how many kids we had.

“Anything you can do at your PAC meetings to encourage parents to register would be great.”

Parents can register their children at their local elementary school, with priority given to students living in the applicable catchment areas.

To enter kindergarten in September 2014, children must be five years of age on or before Dec. 31, 2014. For more information on kindergarten registration, call the district office at 250-542-3331 or see www.sd22.bc.ca.
