Dog bites child in face

Vernon RCMP and SPCA working with families involved after child was bitten in face by a dog with no history of being vicious.

A dog described by RCMP as a “mid-sized crossbreed” was taken by the SPCA after it bit a child Saturday.

Ambulance personnel requested police assistance for a report of a dog bite to a child at a Coldstream residence at about 4:15 p.m.

“It appears the dog bit the child in the face for unknown reasons,” said RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk.

Family members had been looking after their grandson and a friend’s dog, something not uncommon in this case.

“The woman was shocked because she’s known the dog for many years and was looking after it for a friend,” said Molendyk. “The dog has no history of being vicious so we’re not sure what transpired.”

The child, five, was taken to Vernon Jubilee Hospital for treatment while the dog is being held by the SPCA.

RCMP and the SPCA are continuing to work with the families involved in the incident.
