Masset RCMP had their hands full during the past week with incidents of domestic violence and arson, as well as people breaching their conditions of release, says Sgt. Blake Ward. In the early morning hours of June 6, RCMP were called to a residence in Masset where an intoxicated man had been removed and was determined to return. After the occupants got the man outside, he refused to leave the area and subsequently broke back into the house. RCMP responded, arrested the man and lodged him in the cells. Once sober, he was released on a promise to appear to face charges of mischief under $5,000 and break and enter, as well as undertaking to abide by certain conditions. Only three days later, RCMP received another complaint about the same man breaching some of his conditions. Police conducted a number of patrols but weren’t able to find him. Very early in the morning of June 10, RCMP were called to attend an incident where a man had fallen off his bike. It was man they had been looking for. After ensuring he was uninjured, RCMP took him to the cells to sober up before releasing him once again on conditions. Charges are pending for the breaching of the original conditions. On June 8, RCMP responded to a call about a domestic violence incident which resulted in a vehicle being lit on fire. An Old Massett resident has been charged with two counts of assault, one count of assault with a weapon and arson. He was remanded in custody to appear in court on June 14. Police had two other calls during the week about Port Clements residents. On June 4, RCMP responded to a complaint that a 27-year-old Port woman was failing to comply with the conditions of an undertaking she had recently been released on. The woman was arrested and charged with two counts of failing to comply, and released by way of a bail hearing. On June 7, RCMP followed up on a complaint and determined that a Port resident was breaching conditions of his release. The man was arrested and escorted back to the Masset detachment where he was subsequently charged and remanded into custody for eight breaches of his conditions. He was scheduled to appear in provincial court June 12.
