The community is urged to step forward and take action against violence.
Domestic violence unfortunately continues to be a reality, therefore in conjunction with National Victims of Crime Awareness Week, which starts today, a special presentation is taking place Thursday called Unite to End Violence.
Riminder Gakhal will be a keynote speaker at the forum, which takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Schubert Centre. It was 18 years ago, almost to the day, that nine members of the Gakhal and Saran families were murdered by the husband of one of the women.
Along with the presentation, Transition House will have an information table set up at the Village Green Centre Monday through Thursday.
“Somebody will be there to talk about services provided for victims of crime,” said Allison Briggs, awareness and special events co-ordinator, noting that anyone can also call the Crisis Line toll free at 1-888-353-CARE (2273).
“There’s always violence going on but I’m hoping people are becoming more aware and help,” said Briggs.
“It’s our job as a community to gather together and try to help them. It’s about ending violence and supporting people.”
While the Gakhal family has previously held a vigil to remember the 1996 murders, they mourned in private this year.
