Dot Arthur celebrated her 100th birthday April 8.
She was born and raised in Saanich, and now lives in Langford. She has been a member of the Royal Canadian Prince Edward Legion Branch 91 since it first opened in ’64 and still volunteers her time there to this day.
After opening night of the Legion over half a century ago, Dot took all the dishes home and washed them by hand.
Dot has been playing cribbage at the Legion every Tuesday for the last 40 years, and rarely misses a week.
“This is my home away from home,” she said. “When I’m feeling low I come in here and look around, and feel how lucky I am.”
She has one son who lives on Vancouver Island and a handful of grandchildren.
She had one younger brother and two older brothers and her husband passed away in 1975.
She still lives in her own house and walks every day, “She has a pace to her, and it’s fast,” Legion president Norm Scott said.
Scott said she chopped wood out in her yard until she was 80. By many at the Legion, Dot is described as very independent, never one to want the spotlight, and full of fun.
