Two people were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries following a dramatic accident in downtown Terrace last week.
An RCMP investigation indicates around 3:10 p.m., July 4, at the intersection of Kalum St. and Lakelse Ave. a small Pontiac sedan had been travelling westbound on Lakelse Avenue and attempting to turn right (northbound) onto Kalum Street when it was struck from behind by a Suzuki of similar size. The Pontiac was pushed through the intersection and into a tree on the south sidewalk of Lakelse Ave. It sheared through the tree trunk and landed upside down on the pedestrian walkway, a few metres from the business complex.
The Suzuki continued and struck another westbound vehicle on Lakelse Avenue before coming to a stop on Emerson Street.
The truck received only minor damages but the Suzuki and Pontiac vehicles were both towed from the scene and the drivers were transported by ambulance to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
A witness told the Terrace Standard she believed the Pontiac was speeding prior to the accident, but police cannot corroborate the claim. The driver of the Suzuki received a violation ticket for driving without due care.
Police are asking anyone with information about this incident to contact the Terrace RCMP at (250)638-7400.
Since the initial posting of this story Aileen Sherrill identified herself on the Terrace Standard Facebook page as the driver of the Pontiac, thanking those who helped extracate her from the upturned car.
“I was not speeding and was planning on turning right on Kalum,” she wrote. “Apparently, I was hit from behind by someone who was speeding. I was propelled forward at a high rate of speed through the intersection without having any control before hitting the tree and flipping upside down. Again much thanks to all those that came to give me assistance, It was very appreciated and I am very grateful that I survived and that no one on the street was hurt. Certainly counting my blessings.”
