Downtown Vernon assault leads to charges

Victim in Sept. 21 incident remains in hospital with serious head injuries

An arrest has been made in an alleged assault at a Vernon business.

On Oct. 1, an individual was taken into custody in relation to an incident at Monashee’s Bar and Grill Sept. 21 in which a 23-year-old man was reportedly punched and kicked in the head.

“Early indications were they didn’t know each other,” said Gord Molendyk, RCMP spokesperson, who would not speculate on the cause of the assault.

“Fights happen around bars but not to this extent.”

The victim, who was found unconscious, was transferred to Kelowna General Hospital with serious head injuries.

“He continues to receive treatment,” said Molendyk.

The Vernon RCMP continue to seek witnesses to the incident and they can call 250-545-7171.

“The RCMP want to thank the public for their assistance with the investigation,” said Molendyk.

“Some people did call and come forward.”

Lucas Slizak, 23, of Vernon, was charged with aggravated assault. He has been released on conditions of no contact with the victim, obeying a curfew and abstaining from alcohol.
