An air ambulance departs the scene of an accident on Highway 1 south of Ladysmith Tuesday afternoon to medevac an injured driver to hospital in Victoria. Highway 1 was completely closed for two hours following a single-vehicle accident on the southern outskirts of Ladysmith shortly after 3 p.m. Tuesday.  According to the RCMP, a northbound dump truck blew a tire before losing control and smashing through the centre divider.  No other vehicles were involved in the accident; only the driver of the dump truck was injured.  Blair Nicholson, one of the first witnesses on the scene, dialed 911 and watched as the injured driver hoisted himself out of the cabin in spite of a broken leg. First responders attended to the driver's injuries while Nicholson relayed the necessary information to the 911 dispatcher, he said, and within minutes, an ambulance was on the scene. Driver airlifted to hospital after single-vehicle accident at south end of Ladysmith

Highway 1 was closed for over an hour after a gravel truck-and-trailer smashed through the centre divider and flipped shortly after 3 p.m.
