A Burnaby man faces charges after trying to flee from police in Maple Ridge early Wednesday.
A Ridge Meadows Mountie spotted the 43-year-old around 1:30 a.m. on River Road.
When the officer activated his emergency equipment to pull over the rented van, the driver accelerated quickly, reaching a speed over 140 km/h.
RCMP Cpl. Alanna Dunlop said the officer followed at a safe distance, briefly losing sight of the van, but found it in a ditch just around the corner on 240th Street and saw man running away.
He was arrested after a short foot chase and police are recommending he be charged with charged with drunk driving and excessive speeding.
He was released on a promise to appear in court on a later date. The man is known to Ridge Meadows RCMP.
Meat mugger
A man stole several packages of meat from the Real Canadian Superstore Tuesday night after threatening to harm store security.
The man fled on a yellow mountain bike after he confronted the woman.
He is described as a white man in his 30s with stringy hair. He was wearing a black baseball hat, shirt, and jacket with blue jeans.

Theft
Expensive construction equipment and tools were stolen from a site in Pitt Meadows last week.
The theft happened between Friday, July 22 and Monday, July 25, on Airport Way near Southgate Road.
An excavator was also damaged and a lock was taken from a metal container. Ridge Meadows RCMP are investigating.
Break-in
Thieves stole a camera and a 24-inch monitor from a Pitt Meadows home on Kennedy Road last Monday.
The front door was forced open between 10 a.m. and 11:30 p.m.
Pot bust
Almost 200 marijuana plants were seized from Maple Ridge home this week.
Ridge Meadows RCMP’s Street Enforcement Unit seized 184 marijuana plants after executing a search warrant at the house on n 125A Avenue.
One man and two women were arrested, but later released. The team also discovered an electrical by-pass on the property.
