A 45-year-old White Rock woman was taken to hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries Thursday, after she was struck by a vehicle as she crossed Martin Drive at 16 Avenue.
The collision occurred at about 5 p.m. Jan. 24, as a dark blue Ford Escape was turning right off of 16 Avenue to head north on Martin.
When police arrived, they found the woman lying on the road, Surrey RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet said.
White Rock firefighters arrived on the scene in short order and tended to the woman – who was conscious and talking – until paramedics arrived, just before 5:30 p.m.
Witnesses told police the woman was crossing Martin Drive eastbound in the crosswalk on the north side of 16 Avenue when the collision occurred.
Paquet said the driver, a 71-year-old Surrey man told officers “he just didn’t see her.” He remained at the scene, and has been charged under the Motor Vehicle Act with failing to yield for a pedestrian.
It was dark and raining at the time of the collision, and Paquet said the incident is a reminder to drivers and pedestrians alike to take extra precautions on the road.
“There’s a lot going on – give yourself an extra second to look everywhere before you make a manoeuvre,” he said.
Pedestrians choosing to wear dark clothing in such weather need to “be aware that you’re not as visible,” he added.
