It was a slow long weekend for excessive speed in the North Okanagan.
And Vernon-North Okanagan RCMP traffic officers are just fine with that.
Coming off a previous weekend where officers impounded six vehicles on Highway 97 north and south of Vernon because they were between 48 and 83 kilometres an hour over the posted speed limit, officers on the long weekend didn’t come close to matching those totals.
“They are happy to report that they only had to issue one excessive speeding impound this weekend,” said Gord Molendyk, spokesperson for the Vernon-North Okanagan RCMP.
Officers, however, were kept busy as they issued 42 speeding tickets on the long weekend.
They also handed out one 12-hour suspension for alcohol to a driver with a Class 7 novice (N) licence, and one vehicle was impounded because the person behind the wheel was not licensed to drive.
Statistics for the past week in the Vernon-North Okanagan detachment area show there was one 12-hour prohibition for alcohol; one 24-hour prohibition for drugs; three, three-day Immediate Roadside Prohibitions (IRPS) were issued along with five 90-day IRPs; there were no impaired driving arrests and seven vehicles were impounded.
